Consisting of escapees from Northern Delaware's private high schools, Alison Ranger formed in 1999. Three teenage boys, tired of the sterile bands that perpetuated a cynical and insincere music scene, got together in a basement in the Philadelphia suburbs and vowed to never be content with rehashing the same old sound that area bands had been beating to the ground. Since then, this West Chester, Pennsylvania band has been refining their sound through countless shows up and down the East Coast, two tours, and four straight years of practicing.
Alison Ranger's musical and creative strength is powered by the individual band members' exposure to different styles of music. Rather than copying other bands' sounds, Alison Ranger exists in a state of adaptation and evolution, changing their sound from sincere, intrinsic influences. Shortly after their original guitarist's departure, keyboardist Brian Westiner, drummer Nick DeAngelo, and bassist Sandro Braidotti decided that it was time to try a new approach to writing music. Discontent with the aural limitations of a drum set and eager to expand his creative output, Nick acquired a drum machine to add to his intricate and thunderous drumming. Part-time church organist Aaron Keating joined the band to provide concrete support to Brian Westiner's frenzied keyboard wailing. Alex Vallejo, bassist for A Year to Forget, another West Chester band, was soon recruited as a fitting replacement guitarist.
Alison Ranger's new record, cryptically entitled Formula Imperative, rockets the band farther into the sonic world of the Techno-Organic. The opening song Ghost Ship Sightings, a mathy and frenetic funeral dirge, oscillates between the razor-sharp decay of Brian's synth riffs and the nervous air of Sandro's harrowing warning that you are safe in your kitchens. You're safe in your covers. In the fast, fluid Distress Electrics the hazy and urgent keyboards are grounded by earth-shaking drums and jagged guitars. Even in their more direct songs, like the worried Breathing Water and the insistent Bomb Number 20, the melodic repetition of the drums and guitars is kept afloat and crucial by the density of Brian and Aaron's contrasting keyboards.
Call it Electro-Core, Post-Emo, or whatever you want, Alison Ranger is one of the first among a new generation of bands that combine energetic punk sensibilities with electronic music. And they do it with confidence. They are the 88 key lightning attack. They are the epic tornado of sound.
